Rep. Hoyle Condemns House Republicans’ Political Stunts on Immigration, Calls for Bipartisan Action

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Val Hoyle (OR-04) released the following statement in opposition to House Republicans’ non-binding resolution (H.Res. 957) relating to the southern border of the United States:

“Every day this group of House Republicans talks about the crisis at the border and yet refuses to work toward a bipartisan solution to solve our broken immigration system. If they were serious about seeking real solutions, they would stop obstructing President Biden’s negotiations to enhance border security, including hiring additional law enforcement personnel to address increased migrant encounters at the southern border, and work in good faith to solve the problem.

“Instead, House Republicans’ own government funding bills from last year included cuts to border security and immigration processing programs. They are so focused on denying the President a ‘win’ that they are blocking real, bipartisan immigration solutions that would actually address many border concerns –including improving border security, helping to stop fentanyl smuggling, and increasing staffing for immigration processing.

“Congress had a chance to pass comprehensive immigration reform in 2008 and 2013 with significant funding for border security, but congressional Republicans walked away from the deal. Now they’re doing it again.

“Speaker Johnson said yesterday that he doesn’t think Congress should pass comprehensive immigration reform because it’s too hard.  We were elected to do the hard work to find solutions on behalf the American people. I’m prepared to do this work and challenge my House Republican colleagues to stop whining and start working. The safety and security of our country is too important to use as a political football. Americans need action and leadership. Mike Johnson is Speaker of the House, not just the Republican conference, and he should act like it.”
