Rep. Hoyle Statement Against Postmaster General DeJoy Selling Out USPS to DOGE

For Immediate Release: March 13, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Today, Representative Val Hoyle (OR-04) released the following statement after Postmaster General Louis DeJoy revealed in a letter to Congress that he has signed an agreement with Elon Musk’s DOGE:

“The grift could not be clearer. Outgoing Postmaster General DeJoy and DOGE's attack on the USPS is the clearest sign yet that this has nothing to do with delivering efficiency for Americans. The USPS provides the essential services of delivering mail, packages, prescription drugs, and ballots, especially to our rural communities which are often underserved or ignored altogether by private companies. Putting the USPS on a path to privatization doesn't help working people, it helps profit-seeking billionaires monopolize delivery services at the expense of our communities."

Background

The letter from Postmaster General DeJoy proposes concerning actions for DOGE to take at USPS, which could increase the risk of privatization and increased politicization of the Postal Service. This includes DeJoy’s suggestion to dismantle or even eliminate the Postal Regulatory Commission, an independent body established by Congress to oversee the Postal Service, approve rate changes, and ensure adequate service standards.

Public trust in the USPS’s impartiality is central to its duty of delivering millions of absentee and mail-in ballots to Americans during local, state, and federal elections and ensuring their secure passage once complete.
