Rep. Hoyle Statement on House Republicans’ Jamming Through ‘One Big Ugly Bill’

For Immediate Release: May 22, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Today, Representative Val Hoyle (OR-04) voted against House Republicans’ partisan reconciliation bill that includes the biggest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in history. Rep. Hoyle joined House Democrats in filing more than 520 amendments and standing united for more than 29 straight hours to drag Republicans’ late-night hearings into the daylight for the American people.

Following the vote, Rep. Hoyle released the following statement:

“Tonight, House Republicans rammed through a bill that gives millionaires and billionaires a multi-trillion-dollar tax break and pays for it by taking food from children, health care from millions and defunding Planned Parenthood. It puts extreme restrictions on abortion coverage on health exchange plans and guts environmental protections, all while exploding the national debt.

“They rushed this monstrosity through while the country was sleeping because they knew the American people would be outraged if they were able to see what was included. This isn’t how the business of Congress should be done. This wasn’t legislating — it was looting. I voted no."

Background

  • According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, this bill would result in healthcare being taken away from 13.7 million Americans — including over 30,200 of our neighbors in Oregon’s Fourth District.
  • It includes new, extended paperwork requirements for Medicare.
    • Nearly 11 million people, including more than 4 million children and 2 million seniors and adults with disabilities, will be at risk of benefit cuts.
  • This bill also includes the largest cut to SNAP in U.S. history at $230 billion, which would take $30 billion in revenue away from farmers and ranchers and put millions at risk of going hungry — including 145,000 Oregonians.
  • It will cost Oregon $500 million in federal funding, forcing states to raise taxes, cut essential local services and kick people off benefits.
  • The bill also includes $7 trillion in tax write-offs for billionaires and a $314,266 annual tax cut for the richest 0.1%.
