Rep. Hoyle Statement on President Trump Federalizing D.C. Police Department and Deploying National Guard in D.C.
For Immediate Release: August 11, 2025
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Val Hoyle (OR-04) released the following statement after President Trump announced he was federalizing the D.C. police (Metropolitan Police Department) and deploying the D.C. National Guard:
“Let's be clear: this decision has nothing to do with addressing crime and everything to do with an increasingly authoritarian administration that wants to use any excuse and exceptional force to control the American people. This disproportionate response erodes D.C.'s right to self-governance and puts the civil liberties of all D.C. residents at risk.
“Abruptly removing local control over public safety not only undermines community trust but also sets an unworkable precedent for the future. I will continue to push for full oversight and accountability to ensure these powers are being exercised only when necessary.”
